SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — On December 22, 2015, Christy’s Hope for Battered Women & Children presented a check donation of $200,000 to the San Antonio Battered Women & Children’s Shelter. Over the course of 17 years, Christy Prescott’s501(C)(3) charity has donated over $2.1 Million dollars to the shelter which has helped over 300,000 women and children.
Family violence is the #1 crime and cause of injury to women in the U.S. and is believed to be the most common, yet least reported crime in the country. With over 51,000 victims served annually, the San Antonio Battered Women and Children’s Shelter is more than just a place for families to come and rest – it is a place where families support each other, and receive the care needed to heal.
One of the Shelter’s main sources of fundraising is through the annual Christy’s Hope Gala and Golf Tournament. Since Christy’s Hope’s 1st tournament, they have raised money for the shelter to purchase a truck to move families quickly and safely, a new playground, new living quarters, a new dining facility, a new laundry room, and a new educational program called “Christy’s Power”.
“It is very important for people to understand that while this is our mission, it needs to be everyone’s mission. It is an investment in the community,” said Marta B. Pelaez, President/CEO of the Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter. “The ability to give and giving are two different and separate things. You might have the potential to give but actually giving is not something that happens in the same individual too often. In angels like Christy, it happens with such ease, it’s just wonderful.”
